Vehicle Meth Testing in Perth

Test Australia tests cars, utes, campervans, caravans and motorhomes in metropolitan Perth for methamphetamine residue, sampling where the vehicle is parked. It does not clean or decontaminate vehicles. Testing before a clean shows whether residue is present and where. Testing afterwards shows what the clean achieved. A NATA-accredited laboratory analyses the wipes by LC-MS/MS.

Private vehicle sales in WA and what they skip

Transport WA does not require an inspection when a licensed vehicle changes hands privately. An inspection is needed if the vehicle is not licensed in WA or its licence expired three months or more ago (Transport WA, before you buy). In a typical Perth private sale, nobody official looks inside the cabin before the money moves.

That leaves the buyer to decide what checks to arrange. Drug residue on seats, the dashboard and headlining is not something a vehicle inspection or transfer process looks for. This is general information, not legal advice.

PPSR checks and residue testing for Perth buyers

Transport WA suggests a PPSR check, which shows the vehicle's finance status and whether it has been reported as stolen or written off. It also says professional reports and pre-purchase checks can help assess a vehicle's condition.

A PPSR search covers the vehicle's legal and financial history. A mechanical check covers how it runs. Neither measures residue on interior surfaces. Where drug use in the vehicle matters to a decision, wipe sampling before settlement fills that gap. Ask the seller not to detail the interior first, because cleaning changes what can be measured. Our pre-purchase vehicle guide sets out how to fit testing into a sale. This is general information, not legal advice.

The criterion a Perth vehicle report uses

WA Health's testing and remediation guide is written for residential properties, not vehicles. No vehicle-specific level is set in it. The vehicle report therefore states which criterion each result is compared with and why that one was chosen.

Where a campervan or caravan has been lived in, the residential figure is often the natural comparison. 0.5 µg/100 cm² is the residential indoor-surface investigation level for methylamphetamine in the Australian Government's Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines (2011). Going over it triggers further investigation or remediation, and it is not a line between safe and unsafe. Our note on the 0.5 level explains where it comes from.

Common vehicle testing requests in Perth

Common requests include:

  • a private buyer who wants results before paying for a used car, ute or four-wheel drive
  • a new owner who has found something in the vehicle or noticed a smell after purchase
  • a caravan or motorhome buyer where the seller lived in the van
  • a fleet, hire or leasing business checking a returned vehicle before it goes back into service
  • an insurer or owner with a claim, covered in our vehicle insurance claims guide

If a house is part of the same question, meth testing in Perth can be scoped alongside the vehicle.

Sampling a vehicle where it is kept in Perth

Vehicles are sampled where they are parked, whether at a home, a seller's premises, a yard or a storage facility, with permission from whoever controls the vehicle. It needs to be dry and accessible inside. Any metropolitan Perth location can be attended, and regional WA is by arrangement. Test Australia does not clean, detail or decontaminate vehicles and does not recommend anyone who does. If a vehicle is cleaned, a second round on comparable surfaces shows what remains.

Laboratory analysis of Perth vehicle samples

Test Australia's suitably qualified occupational hygienists take wipe samples from measured areas under chain of custody. A NATA-accredited laboratory then analyses them by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received.

A home kit, from the shop, works as a presumptive screen (see how home kits work) at a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off. It is not laboratory analysis, it gives no measured figure, and a positive or unclear screen needs laboratory testing. The national vehicle meth testing page describes the service in general, our NIOSH 9111 note covers the method, and the types of assessment work page shows the range of jobs Test Australia takes on.

Testing a vehicle in Perth, step by step

  1. Send the vehicle details. Tell us the make and type, where it is parked in Perth, who controls access and whether the result is for a purchase, a fleet return or a claim.
  2. Accept the fee proposal. A written fee proposal sets out the surfaces in scope. A car cabin and a caravan with living areas are scoped differently.
  3. Sample before any detailing. Wipes are taken on site from measured areas, with the vehicle undisturbed where the question is its history.
  4. Laboratory analysis. Samples travel under chain of custody to a NATA-accredited laboratory for LC-MS/MS analysis following NIOSH Method 9111.
  5. Signed vehicle report. Results are listed by location, with the criterion the report uses, the reasons for it and the limits of the sampling.

Vehicle meth testing questions in Perth

Does a WA private car sale include any inspection of the interior?

Transport WA does not require an inspection for a private transfer of a licensed vehicle. One is needed only if the vehicle is unlicensed in WA or its licence expired three months or more ago. Nothing in that process checks for drug residue inside the cabin. This is general information, not legal advice.

Will a PPSR check tell a Perth buyer about meth in a car?

No. Transport WA suggests a PPSR check, which shows the vehicle's finance status and whether it has been reported as stolen or written off. It says nothing about residue on interior surfaces. Wipe sampling analysed at a laboratory is the way to measure that before you pay.

Is there a WA standard for meth residue in vehicles?

WA Health's testing and remediation guide is written for residential properties and sets no vehicle-specific level. A Perth vehicle report states which criterion each result is compared with and why. For a van that someone lived in, the residential investigation level is often the comparison used.

Can a vehicle be sampled at a Perth seller's home or yard?

Yes, with permission from whoever controls the vehicle. Sampling happens where it is parked across metropolitan Perth, provided the interior is dry and accessible. Regional WA is by arrangement. Tell us the location and access details when you enquire so the visit can be planned.

Should a Perth seller detail the car before meth testing?

Not if the question is the vehicle's history. Detailing changes what is on the surfaces and can lower what samples show. If a clean is planned, test first. A second round on comparable surfaces after the clean then shows what remains against the named criterion.

Who analyses vehicle wipe samples from Perth?

A NATA-accredited laboratory analyses them by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Its suitably qualified occupational hygienists collect the samples on site and keep the chain of custody record, and the laboratory findings go with the signed report.

How soon is a Perth vehicle meth report available?

Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received. Private sales can move quickly, so tell us when the seller expects payment and whether the vehicle can be held, and sampling can be arranged with that date in mind.

Is a DIY kit enough before buying a car in Perth?

A DIY kit only screens presumptively at a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off. It is not laboratory analysis and gives no measured figure. It can suit a first look at a car you already own. A positive or unclear screen, or any purchase decision that depends on the answer, needs laboratory testing.
