A WA guide that covers more than meth
WA Health's Guide for Testing and Remediation of Meth and Illicit Drug Residues in Residential Properties names illicit drug residues in its title, not only meth. Version 1 appeared in 2023 and version 2 in 2026, and it is written for the companies that test and clean homes in WA.
The numeric level in that guide belongs to one drug. 0.5 µg/100 cm² is the residential indoor-surface investigation level for methylamphetamine in the Australian Government's Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines (2011), and it triggers further investigation or remediation rather than marking a line between safe and unsafe. The 0.5 µg/100 cm² figure in that guide is for methylamphetamine. It does not transfer to cocaine or cannabis, which have no Australian health investigation level. Results for drugs without an Australian level are read against a criterion the report identifies, with its reasons. Our note on the 0.5 level covers the meth figure. This is general information, not legal advice.
What wastewater data shows about drug use in WA
The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission's National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program Report 25 found that regional WA currently has Australia's highest methylamphetamine consumption, and that Perth was among the capitals with the highest consumption. The same report found cocaine consumption at WA sites was below average.
It also notes that amphetamine prescribing for ADHD has increased, particularly in WA, which affects wastewater amphetamine readings. Wastewater figures describe whole populations, not single homes. They do not tell you what is on the walls of one Perth property, which is why a surface result for each drug in scope is needed, with the report stating what that result can and cannot show about the source.
Disputes over drug testing work in WA
WA Health's guide says that in some situations, such as disputes over contracts or service arrangements, the Consumer Protection division will be the main arbiter of a dispute. That division sits within the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety. That makes a clear written scope worth having. It should list each drug, the areas sampled and the criterion each result will be read against.
The guide also recommends that the testing company is a different company from the one that does the clean-up. Test Australia tests and reports only, with no cleaning arm and no referral income. Whether a tribunal, court or insurer later relies on a report is a decision for them. This is general information, not legal advice.
When Perth properties need a wider drug panel
Common requests include:
- a tenancy where more than one drug has been alleged, and the parties want each one measured
- a property with a suspected cannabis grow, covered in our grow house guide
- a home where a screen or earlier report raised questions that meth alone does not answer
- a validation round after a clean, where the original findings were not only meth
- a buyer who wants meth tested and has a reason to add other drugs to the same visit
Our pages on multi-drug panels and testing beyond meth explain how analytes are chosen. If meth is the only concern, meth testing in Perth is the simpler service.
Laboratory analysis for Perth drug residue samples
Test Australia's suitably qualified occupational hygienists collect surface wipes under chain of custody. Where meth is in scope, it is analysed by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111 at a NATA-accredited laboratory. For the other drugs, the report names the laboratory and states any accreditation that applies. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited.
Each drug is reported on its own line against its own criterion. Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received. The national drug residue testing page covers the service in general, and what NATA accreditation covers explains the laboratory side.
Booking a Perth drug residue assessment
Before the fee proposal, tell us which drugs are of concern and why, such as a police notice, an admission, an agent's report or an earlier result. That background decides which analytes are worth paying for. Field visits cover the Perth metropolitan area, with regional WA by arrangement. See the types of assessment work Test Australia does, other Perth services, or vehicle testing in Perth if a car is involved.
How a Perth drug residue job is run
- Explain the concern. Tell us which drugs are suspected and what the suspicion rests on, along with the Perth address and what the result is for.
- Fix the drug list. The written fee proposal names each drug to be analysed, the areas in scope and the criterion for each. You approve it before booking.
- Surface sampling. Wipes are collected from the agreed areas and sealed under chain of custody for the laboratory.
- Analysis by drug. The laboratory analyses each drug in scope. Meth goes by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111 at a NATA-accredited laboratory.
- Separate results in one report. The signed report lists each drug on its own, with its criterion, the reasons for that choice and the limits of the work.
Perth drug residue testing questions
Does the WA Health guide apply to drugs other than meth in Perth?
Its title covers meth and illicit drug residues in residential properties, so its scope is wider than meth. It is written for testing and remediation companies in WA. The 0.5 µg/100 cm² level it adopts is for methylamphetamine. Drugs without an Australian level, such as cocaine and cannabis, need a criterion the report names and explains.
What is a cocaine or cannabis result compared with in a Perth report?
The 0.5 µg/100 cm² figure applies to methylamphetamine only. For cocaine, cannabis and other drugs without an Australian level, the report names the criterion it uses and explains why it was chosen. You see that criterion in the fee proposal before sampling, so there are no surprises in how results are read.
Does high meth use in WA wastewater mean my Perth home is affected?
No. ACIC Report 25 found regional WA has Australia's highest meth consumption and Perth is among the highest capitals, but wastewater data describes populations. It says nothing about a single property. Only surface sampling at the home itself shows what residue is there.
Who handles a dispute with a WA drug testing or clean-up company?
WA Health's guide says that in some situations, such as disputes over contracts or service arrangements, the Consumer Protection division will be the main arbiter of a dispute. A clear written scope that lists each drug and criterion helps either way. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do I choose which drugs to test for at a Perth property?
Start with what you know. A police notice, an agent's report, an admission or an earlier result each points to particular drugs. Tell us the background and the fee proposal will list the drugs worth analysing, so you are not paying for analytes that cannot answer your question.
Who analyses non-meth drug samples from Perth?
An independent laboratory. For drugs other than meth, the report names the laboratory and states any accreditation that applies. Meth, where included, is analysed by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111 at a NATA-accredited laboratory. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited.
Can meth and other drugs be tested in one Perth visit?
Yes. Where meth is the main concern and other drugs are a second question, both can be scoped into the same visit. The report gives each drug its own result and criterion, so a finding for one drug is never blended with the results for another.
When is the Perth drug residue report ready?
Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received. If a settlement, bond claim or new tenancy date is near, tell us when you first enquire so the visit, the drug list and the laboratory booking can all be settled early.
