Vehicle Meth Testing in Hobart

Test Australia tests cars, campervans, caravans and motorhomes in Hobart for methamphetamine residue. Test Australia samples the vehicle where it is parked. It does not clean or decontaminate. A vehicle bought on the mainland can also be sampled in an attended city such as Melbourne before it is shipped. A NATA-accredited laboratory analyses the wipes by LC-MS/MS.

What Transport Tasmania asks vehicle buyers to check

Transport Tasmania's guidance on buying a vehicle says a vehicle that has been unregistered for three months or more must be inspected at an Approved Inspection Station before it is registered in the buyer's name. It also advises checking the PPSR for securities lodged against the vehicle and using Rego Check for stolen or written-off status. This is general information, not legal advice.

Those checks deal with finance, theft and write-off history, plus an inspection where one applies. Methamphetamine residue on cab surfaces is a separate question, and only sampling and laboratory analysis answer it.

Testing a van before or after it crosses Bass Strait

Common requests include campervans, caravans and motorhomes found on the mainland and shipped to Tasmania. Shipping across Bass Strait takes time and money, so the timing of a test matters.

  • Before shipping. Test Australia works in all eight capital cities, so a van in a mainland capital can be sampled where the seller keeps it while you can still walk away. See vehicle meth testing in Melbourne.
  • After arrival. The vehicle is sampled at a home, yard or storage site in Greater Hobart.
  • A first screen on a vehicle you already own, using a kit from our shop.

Where vehicles are sampled around Greater Hobart

Vehicles are sampled across the four council areas in the Greater Hobart framework: Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart and Kingborough. Under the Greater Hobart Act 2019 framework, those councils work with the Tasmanian Government (Greater Hobart: who we are). Each vehicle is sampled where it is parked, with the agreement of whoever controls them. The vehicle needs to be accessible and dry. Elsewhere in Tasmania is by arrangement.

The criterion a Hobart vehicle report uses

Each report states the criterion its results are compared with and why that criterion was chosen. For reference, 0.5 µg/100 cm² is the residential indoor-surface investigation level for methylamphetamine in the Australian Government's Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines (2011). It triggers further investigation or remediation and is not a line between safe and unsafe. More is in understanding the 0.5 level.

Wipes from measured areas of the cab and any living space are collected following NIOSH Method 9111. Each one is analysed by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111 at a NATA-accredited laboratory. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Our NATA page explains the difference. No single result shows whether a vehicle was used to make drugs or only to use them.

Kits, detailing and hire vehicles in Hobart

A home kit is a presumptive screen with a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off. It does not measure a concentration and is not laboratory analysis, so before paying for a van, or after a positive or unclear screen, choose laboratory testing. How to use a meth test kit explains the steps.

If a vehicle's history matters, sample before it is cleaned or detailed, because cleaning changes the evidence. Test Australia does not clean or recommend cleaners. Hire and tour operators can arrange testing between hirers or before a sale. See the pre-purchase vehicle guide, vehicle insurance claims, the national vehicle meth testing page and the types of assessment work we report on.

Steps for vehicle meth testing in Hobart

  1. Say where the vehicle is. Tell us whether it is in Greater Hobart, elsewhere in Tasmania or still on the mainland, the vehicle type and any shipping or purchase date.
  2. Approve the fee proposal. The written proposal lists the areas to be sampled, the analysis and the purpose of the report.
  3. Sampling where it is parked. Suitably qualified occupational hygienists wipe measured areas of the cab and any living space, with chain-of-custody records.
  4. Signed vehicle report. Results are set out by location against the stated criterion, with limits. Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received.

Hobart vehicle meth testing questions

What does Transport Tasmania suggest checking before buying a used vehicle?

Its buying guidance advises checking the PPSR for securities lodged against the vehicle and using Rego Check for stolen or written-off status. A vehicle unregistered for three months or more must be inspected at an Approved Inspection Station before it is registered in your name. Meth testing is a separate check. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can a campervan be tested on the mainland before it is shipped to Tasmania?

Yes, if it is in a mainland capital city such as Melbourne. Test Australia works in all eight capital cities. Testing before the van crosses Bass Strait gives you results while you can still walk away from the purchase. Tell us the seller's location and the shipping date when you enquire.

Which parts of Greater Hobart do you sample vehicles in?

Vehicles are sampled where they are parked across the four council areas in the Greater Hobart framework: Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart and Kingborough. The person who controls the vehicle must agree to access, and it needs to be dry. Sampling elsewhere in Tasmania is arranged separately.

What criterion does a Hobart vehicle meth report use?

Each Hobart vehicle report states the criterion it applies and the reason for choosing it. For reference, 0.5 µg/100 cm² is the residential indoor-surface investigation level in the Australian Government's 2011 guidelines, and it is not a line between safe and unsafe.

How is a caravan or motorhome sampled in Hobart?

Like a small home. Suitably qualified occupational hygienists wipe measured areas in the cab and living areas following NIOSH Method 9111. Each wipe is analysed by LC-MS/MS at a NATA-accredited laboratory. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Results are reported location by location in a signed report.

Should a Hobart van be detailed before it is tested?

Not if its history matters. Cleaning or detailing changes the evidence, so sample first. Test Australia does not clean or recommend cleaners. If work follows, a second round of sampling at comparable locations shows what the clean achieved, reported against the same stated criterion.

Is a kit enough before buying a vehicle in Tasmania?

A kit is a presumptive screen with a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off. It gives one result for the spot you swabbed. It does not measure a concentration and is not laboratory analysis. Before paying for a vehicle, or after a positive or unclear screen, laboratory testing gives measured results by location.

How soon is a Hobart vehicle meth report available?

Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received. If a purchase, shipping booking or hire is waiting on the result, mention the date when you enquire. The fee proposal confirms the sampling plan and dates before anything is booked.
