What 2017 wastewater data said about Hobart
The first National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program report, released in March 2017, found Tasmania's capital city sites had some of the lowest methylamphetamine consumption in the country. Consumption of methylamphetamine and MDMA was noticeably higher at the State's regional sites. The same release reported oxycodone consumption at the capital city sites as the highest of any Australian capital, and noted that wastewater cannot show whether use is licit or illicit (ACIC: Tasmania wastewater findings).
Those findings belong to that 2017 release only. They describe drug use across a population, not residue inside any one property, and they cannot predict what a Hobart house will show.
National trends and regional Tasmania
ACIC's Report 25, released on 30 April 2026, found national methylamphetamine consumption at the highest level since the program began in 2016. Regional areas recorded substantially higher per-capita methylamphetamine use than capital cities (ACIC: Report 25). That is a national finding, not a Tasmanian one.
For a single property, only sampling answers the question. Common requests include owners who suspect a rental was used for drugs other than meth, buyers told of a history of drug use, and agents handling a house outside Greater Hobart, where attendance is by arrangement. See testing in regional Australia.
Tasmania's clandestine drug laboratory guide and other drugs
The Department of Health's Guide for the Management of Clandestine Drug Laboratories deals with clandestine drug laboratories, and the ABLIS listing describes clan labs as used to illegally manufacture drugs, including methamphetamines. The guide covers identifying and managing the public health risks of former labs, and property owners or their agents, occupiers and professionals assessing sites may also refer to it. This is general information, not legal advice.
The 0.5 µg/100 cm² figure in the Australian Government's Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines (2011) is the residential indoor-surface investigation level for methylamphetamine only. It triggers further investigation or remediation and is not a line between safe and unsafe. For any other drug, the Hobart report names the criterion it uses and explains why. See understanding the 0.5 level.
Building a multi-drug scope for a Hobart property
The fee proposal lists the drugs of concern, the sampling locations and the purpose of the report before anything is booked. Suitably qualified occupational hygienists collect surface samples under chain of custody. The report names the laboratory and states any accreditation that applies. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Results for each drug are reported separately, with the limits of the work.
Background reading includes drug residue testing beyond meth, multi-drug panel testing, cannabis grow house contamination and the national drug residue testing page.
Independent drug residue results in Hobart
The meth kits in our shop screen for methamphetamine only and cannot detect other drugs. Test Australia does not clean, remediate or recommend cleaners, and takes no referral income. If a property is cleaned by others, another round of sampling at comparable locations shows the outcome.

Steps for drug residue testing in Hobart
- Name the drugs of concern. Send the Hobart address, the drugs you are worried about, the reason for the concern and any deadline or council letter.
- Agree the drug list and locations. The written fee proposal sets out the drugs, the sampling locations and the purpose of the report.
- Surface sampling. Suitably qualified occupational hygienists collect samples from the agreed locations, recording chain of custody from site to laboratory.
- Drug-by-drug report. Each drug is reported separately against a named criterion. Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received.
Hobart drug residue testing questions
What did wastewater testing show about drug use in Hobart?
The first national wastewater report, released in March 2017, found Tasmania's capital city sites had some of the lowest methylamphetamine use nationally, with regional sites noticeably higher. Oxycodone use at the capital sites was the highest of any capital. Those figures come from that 2017 release only.
Does the 2017 oxycodone finding for Tasmania's capital say anything about my house?
No. The 2017 ACIC release measured consumption across a population through wastewater and noted that wastewater cannot show whether use is licit or illicit. It cannot describe residue inside a particular Hobart property. Only surface sampling, analysed by a laboratory, answers that question for a home.
Is regional Tasmania different from Hobart for drug use?
The 2017 ACIC release found methylamphetamine and MDMA use noticeably higher at Tasmania's regional sites than at the capital sites. Nationally, Report 25 in 2026 found regional per-capita methylamphetamine use substantially higher than in capital cities. Testing outside Greater Hobart is arranged case by case.
Does Tasmania's clan lab guide cover drugs other than meth?
The guide deals with clandestine drug laboratories, and the ABLIS listing describes clan labs as used to illegally manufacture drugs, including methamphetamines. Its detailed contents are not summarised here. For any drug other than methylamphetamine, a Hobart report names its own criterion and explains why. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can a meth kit pick up other drugs in a Hobart home?
No. The kits screen for methamphetamine only, and even then a kit is a presumptive screen with a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off that does not measure a concentration. Concerns about cannabis, opioids or several drugs need surface samples analysed by a laboratory against an agreed list.
Which drugs can be included in a Hobart residue test?
The drug list is agreed in the written fee proposal, based on your concern and the purpose of the report. The method is confirmed at that point, and each drug is reported separately. Our multi-drug panel guide explains how panels are put together and what affects the scope.
Who analyses drug residue samples from a Hobart property?
An independent laboratory, not Test Australia. The report names the laboratory and states any accreditation that applies. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Suitably qualified occupational hygienists collect the samples on site and keep chain-of-custody records, and each signed report sets out the method, the results and the limits.
How long does a Hobart drug residue report take?
Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received. A longer drug list can change the analysis, so the fee proposal confirms the scope and available dates before booking. Mention any settlement, tenancy or council deadline when you first get in touch.
