Measuring meth residue in Adelaide vehicles

A used vehicle can carry drug residue that nobody can see or smell. Test Australia samples cars, utes, caravans and motorhomes where they are parked around Adelaide and reports the measured result for each sample. It does not clean or detail vehicles.

The work sits alongside the other testing we do in Adelaide. If a house is part of the same question, meth testing in Adelaide can be scoped at the same time.

SA registration transfers and what they leave out

When you buy an SA-registered vehicle, the registration must be transferred into your name no later than 14 days after purchase. The state's transfer page names a change of ownership inspection only for heavy vehicles and trailers that are 3 years or older (SA.GOV.AU, transfer registration). This is general information, not legal advice.

None of the transfer steps involves sampling the interior for drug residue. A buyer who wants that answer has to arrange it, ideally before the 14-day clock starts.

Service SA and PPSR checks for Adelaide buyers

The SA Driver's Handbook tells buyers to check through Service SA whether a second-hand car is recorded as stolen, written-off or defected. It also says to search the national Personal Property Securities Register with the VIN, and notes that registered ownership does not prove legal ownership (SA Driver's Handbook, buying a car). This is general information, not legal advice.

Those records cover title, debt, write-off and defect status. Residue on interior surfaces is a separate question that only sampling and analysis can answer. The pre-purchase vehicle testing guide shows where a residue test fits beside the record checks.

How SA Health's drug lab definition covers vehicles

SA Health's definition of a clandestine drug laboratory covers vehicles as well as buildings. Its factsheet warns that contamination may be present even without any smell or visible staining, and says assessors need tertiary qualifications in a field such as occupational hygiene. It also says remediation contractors should have no link to the assessor (SA Health clandestine drug laboratory factsheet). This is general information, not legal advice.

Test Australia's suitably qualified occupational hygienists test and report only. The reasons are set out in why we do not remediate, and the team's background is on the credentials page.

Sampling vehicles across the Greater Adelaide councils

For state planning, Greater Adelaide is made up of 27 councils. Beyond the metropolitan cities, they include Adelaide Hills, Mount Barker, Barossa, Gawler, Adelaide Plains, Victor Harbor and the Rural City of Murray Bridge (PlanSA, Greater Adelaide Regional Plan).

A vehicle in any of these areas is sampled where it is kept, such as a home, a car yard or a storage shed, with consent from whoever controls it. The interior needs to be dry and accessible. Sampling elsewhere in South Australia is by arrangement, as described in testing in regional Australia.

Reading an Adelaide vehicle meth result

The report states which criterion results are compared against and why. 0.5 µg/100 cm² is the residential indoor-surface investigation level for methylamphetamine in the Australian Government's Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines (2011). It triggers further investigation or remediation and is not a line between safe and unsafe. The 0.5 level explainer covers its origin.

Meth is analysed by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111 at a NATA-accredited laboratory, with samples tracked under chain of custody. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited, as the NATA page explains. Reports are available within 5 business days of the laboratory results being received.

Claims, disputes and home kits in Adelaide

Common requests include a buyer negotiating on a caravan, an owner whose car came back from a loan, and a claim covered in our vehicle insurance claims guide. Whether a tribunal, court or insurer relies on a report is a decision for them.

A home kit from the shop is a presumptive screen at a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off. A kit gives no concentration and is not laboratory analysis, so a positive or unclear result on a vehicle needs laboratory testing. Our kit instructions explain how to use a kit. For other drugs, see drug residue testing in Adelaide. The national vehicle meth testing page and our types of assessment work give the wider picture. To book, request a fee proposal.

From enquiry to report for an Adelaide vehicle

1

Describe the vehicle and the deadline

Tell us the vehicle type, where it is parked in Greater Adelaide and whether a 14-day registration transfer or a sale date applies.

2

Receive a written fee proposal

The proposal is shaped by the vehicle type, whether living areas are in scope and any travel beyond the metropolitan councils.

3

Leave the interior as it is

Ask that the vehicle is not detailed before the visit, because cleaning changes what the samples can show.

4

On-site wipe sampling

Suitably qualified occupational hygienists collect wipes from measured areas and send them under chain of custody to a NATA-accredited laboratory.

5

Signed Adelaide vehicle report

Each result is listed by location against the stated criterion, with the limits of the work set out plainly.

Adelaide and South Australia vehicle meth questions

The buyer of an SA-registered vehicle must transfer the registration no later than 14 days after purchase. If you want residue results before you commit, book sampling while the seller still has the vehicle, because laboratory analysis takes time. This is general information, not legal advice.
No. The SA Driver's Handbook suggests checking through Service SA for stolen, written-off or defected status and searching the PPSR with the VIN. Those records cover title, debt, write-off and defect status. Neither looks at residue on the interior, which needs wipe sampling and laboratory analysis.
Yes. SA Health's definition of a clandestine drug laboratory covers vehicles as well as buildings. Its factsheet also warns that contamination can be present without any smell or staining, which is why measured sampling matters for a vehicle with an unknown history. This is general information, not legal advice.
Yes. Both councils sit within Greater Adelaide for state planning, and a caravan or motorhome there can be sampled where it is stored, with consent from whoever controls it. The interior needs to be dry and accessible. Tell us the location when you ask for a fee proposal.
The report states which criterion results are compared against and why. One reference point it may use is the residential indoor-surface investigation level of 0.5 µg/100 cm² in the Australian Government's 2011 guidelines. That level triggers further investigation or remediation and is not a line between safe and unsafe.
A NATA-accredited laboratory analyses them by LC-MS/MS following NIOSH Method 9111. Test Australia itself is not NATA-accredited. Test Australia collects the wipes, keeps the chain of custody record and writes the signed report that interprets the laboratory figures for your vehicle.
A report sets out measured results, the method and its limits, which an insurer can consider. Whether a tribunal, court or insurer relies on a report is a decision for them. Our vehicle insurance claims guide explains what to gather before you contact your insurer.
Not on its own. A home kit is a presumptive screen at a 0.5 µg/100 cm² cut-off. It is not laboratory analysis and gives no measured concentration. It can suit a first look at a car you already own, but a positive or unclear result needs laboratory testing.
